In the Netherlands, from the late 1950s to the 1970s, a number of periodicals were published with contributions by artists that can be classified as artists' books, like Subvers, a magazine devoted in particular to Hans Clavin's konkrete poetry. He created his own publishing house, Subvers Press, which published its own Subvers magazine. From 1970 to 1976, twelve editions appeared, seven of which were devoted to a single artist.

The theme of love is a central one in Hans Clavin’s work. At first he presented it chiefly in a romantic and humorous way and with a powerful sexual charge. Later, in editions such as Porno/graphic Poetry, he takes a more critical approach towards the theme. Subvers 2 is a three-panel 8vo card stock folder containing ten loose plates printed in color on yellow paper on recto side only. Texts are mostly in English, some in Dutch and German.

Woorden. Een onderdeel van het gesproken woord is de klank, een aspect van het geschreven en gedrukte woord is het visuele: de vorm van de letters en hun plaats en rangschikking op de bladspiegel. Het visuele element kan gebruikt worden, zoals de klank bij het gesproken woord, om iets naders over het woord of de taal in het algemeen uit te drukkken. Dit is in het verleden betrekkelijk weinig gebeurd; voornamelijk twintigste eeuwse beeldende kunstenaars, affiche-ontwerpers en reclame-mensen hebben het visuele aspekt van de taal uitgebuit en vervolgens de dichters van de zgn. 'konkrete poëzie'. De laatsten isoleerden bovendien het woord en ontbonden het soms in zijn komponenten: letters, waarna het in hoofdzaak een picturaal uitdrukkingsmiddel werd en verwijderd raakte van zijn oorspronkelijke funktie. De dichters van een verwant genre, de 'visuele poëzie', hebben, eveneens van het woordbeeld uitgaande, een nog verdergaande konsequentie getrokken: zij hebben de hele visuele omgeving rond het gedrukte woord in hun kreatie betrokken en het geheel - woord en beeld dus - tot een specifieke poëtiese uitdrukkingsvorm gemaakt. De winst van deze vorm-van-poëzie, zowel t.o.v. de typiese woordpoëzie als de 'konkrete poëzie', is dat de taal uit zijn geisoleerde positie wordt gehaald - vergelijkbaar met wat de multimedia-evenementen op het toneel doen - en dat deze in de beste gevallen in een wijdere (sociale) kontekst wordt geplaatst; in andere lopen woord en beeld opzettelijk a-synchroon of is het picturale weer hoofdzaak geworden en bevindt men zich op het terrein van de woordloze beeldende poëzie. Het werk van Hans Clavin is een stimulerend voorbeeld in het genre 'visuele poëzie' en daar de bladen in dit boek bovendien thematische verbindlngen hebben - hoewel minder in het geknipte woord en de gecomponeerde letterstructuren dan in het gesneden beeld en het handgeschreven citaat -, maakt dit het doorbladeren ervan tot een boeiend avontuur en ook het lezen van de sterk vervreemde taalflarden tot een leesavontuur. "L'angerie" toont aan dat tussen beeldtaal en taalbeeld een nog grotendeels onontgonnen terrein ligt, dat waard is geëxploreerd te worden.

Hans van der Heijden - (1965 -1976) - 1982

Hans van der Heijden is the given name of Hans Clavin, known as a visual poet and publisher/editor. Some of these poems predate the visual poetry for which he is known, even though the publication is a decade older than his other work. Fizz-Subvers Press was run by Hans van der Heijden himself. The laid-in instructions in Dutch instruct you to switch the arms of a clock for these illustrations.

An early artists' book by Dutch artist Hans Clavin featuring a large collection of concrete and visual poetry. Published with several embellishments, including an initialed sheet of sandpaper titled 'poetry quality' laid in, and a blue dishcloth bound into the text block with the words 'make ready' handwritten in red marker. Also laid in is a twice-folded concrete poetry paper sculpture and a type-written receipt signed by the artist. One of Clavin's earliest artists' books, preceding 'L'Angerie. Visuele Poezie.' published in 1973. Complete with an introduction by Belgian concrete poet Paul de Vree. Rare. Clavin's work has appeared in numerous international publications on concrete and visual poetry, including De Tafelronde, Edgardo Antonio Vigo's Diagonal Cero, Geiger, Ezio Gribaudo: Il peso del concreto, and Bolletino Tool among others.
